In 'Good Morning' 2005 Melvin uses the 1951 musical “Singing in the Rain” as inspiration, manipulating the original film through editing and looping. What we are presented with is a reinterpretation of the original film, where it’s romantic and utopian depiction of life is changed drastically through the editing process. Instead of singing and dancing, Gene Kelly, Donald O’Connor and Debbie Reynolds are presented in a different light, slumped on a sofa comatose and induced, incessantly looped in rhythmic gesture. The chirpy interaction of the original characters is replaced with a darker more humorous content, with the loops linked by Melvin’s choice of subtitles. These fragments from the song "Good Morning" featured in the original motion picture, make up a desperate commentary to the characters actions, cynically edited to change the meaning of the original lyrics.
