Melvin recreates a scene from "The Sound of Music" in which the Von Trapp children introduce themselves to their governess Maria, played by Julie Andrews. He meticulously edits the video footage, repeating the amateur actors' movements forward and in reverse. He isolates and manipulates their minimal gestures and the resulting ambient sounds. The scene is mirrored on a second screen so the performers are literally trapped in an edited loop, unable to escape the endless cycle imposed on them by the process involved.
This work was part of 'The Second Hand Unwinds', the installation Melvin produced with the Crosby Homes Manchester Art Prize 2004.
